Odoo 20 is the newest major version of the Odoo ERP system. Odoo S.A. unveiled it on 24 September 2026 at Odoo Experience in Brussels. The big theme is AI: you can describe a process in plain language and an AI agent sets up the automation for you. It also adds offline mode for field teams, a rebuilt bank reconciliation, and new GST features for India.
Odoo ships one major version every year. Odoo 19 came out in September 2025, and Odoo 20 replaces it as the current version. This guide explains what is new, what it costs, what it means for businesses in India, and whether you should upgrade now or wait.

What's new in Odoo 20? The 10 changes that matter most
Odoo's release notes run to hundreds of items across every app. Most businesses will notice these ten first. Each one is taken from Odoo's official Odoo 20 release notes and launch announcement.
1. AI agents that set up automations from plain language
In Odoo 20 you can tell an AI agent what you want in everyday language, for example "when a big order comes in, alert the sales manager and create a follow-up task". The agent explains exactly what it is about to do, and then the automation runs on its own. Agents can now create and update records, work with uploaded files, run on a schedule, and show live updates on what they are doing. Conversations are kept for 30 days, and you can talk to the agent by voice.
2. An Accounting AI and a rebuilt bank reconciliation
You can ask the Accounting AI agent questions such as "how much are customers owing us?" or "what is our cash flow?", and it answers from your own reports. Bank reconciliation has been rebuilt: every journal entry that touches a bank account must now come from a bank transaction, which stops the manual mismatches that make month-end painful. Vendor bill lines are predicted from history (product, account, tax), and Odoo now warns you before you pay the same bill twice.
One change to tell your finance team about: payment statuses have new names. "In Process" is now "Paid", and "Paid" is now "Reconciled".
3. Connect ChatGPT, Claude or any AI through MCP
Odoo 20 adds an MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector. In simple terms, it is a standard plug that lets outside AI tools read and work with your Odoo data, with your permission. Odoo calls AI "the heart of the new version", and MCP is how it opens that up beyond Odoo's own assistant.
4. Works offline, and Field Service moves into Planning
If your team loses signal on a customer site, Odoo now keeps working offline. Staff can view, edit and create records, and everything syncs when they are back online. Field Service now sits inside the Planning app: you drag jobs onto a calendar, travel time is worked out automatically, and a map view shows where your crew is. Google, Outlook and other calendars sync into one view.
5. A cleaner screen on phones and tablets
Forms have been redesigned for touch screens. Date pickers open as bottom sheets, you can swipe down to open the command palette, and new icons replace the old ones. You can now drag and drop several records at once in list and Kanban views, and pin important messages in the chatter.
6. Point of Sale: returns, floor plans and faster restaurant service
The Point of Sale app now handles customer returns. Restaurants get a redesigned floor plan editor, combo meals that build themselves as you add menu items, and a one-tap "snooze" for a dish that has run out, which updates both the POS and online orders. Customer notes at checkout show up on the kitchen screen.
7. Inventory and barcode scanning
Warehouse staff can create a product by scanning its barcode, generate lot and serial numbers in bulk, choose whether to create a backorder, and type quantities in by hand when needed. Shops can now sell online without installing the full Inventory app, using a simplified on-hand stock figure.
8. CRM: more leads and fairer lead sharing
Lead generation now uses Dun & Bradstreet data (Odoo says its directory covers more than 580 million companies) instead of Clearbit. New lead rotation options share leads across the sales team, and a pipeline switcher lets managers jump between teams. Salespeople can scan a business card to create an opportunity.
9. Website and eCommerce with AI
You can generate website pages, images and promotions from a short description. Online shops get automatic cross-selling, review request emails after purchase, customer returns through the portal, preferred delivery dates, and WhatsApp follow-ups for abandoned carts.
10. HR: attendance, overtime and the new Light User
Attendance gets overtime rules, colour-coded under- and over-time indicators, check-in photos and automatic check-out for flexible schedules. Appraisals support 360-degree feedback from anyone, not only employees. The new Light User access lets employees who only need HR functions (such as leave or payslips) use Odoo at a lower price than a full user licence.
What does Odoo 20 change for businesses in India?
Odoo 20 makes the Indian localisation noticeably stronger for GST and TDS. The five India-specific changes in the official release notes are listed below. If you are a composition taxpayer, or you import goods and pay customs duty, these are reasons to plan your upgrade sooner.

Odoo 19 vs Odoo 20: what is the difference?
The main difference between Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 is that Odoo 20 turns AI from a helper into something that does work: it builds automations, answers accounting questions and connects to outside AI tools through MCP. Odoo 20 also changes how bank reconciliation works, adds offline mode, and moves Field Service into Planning.

The technical rows matter if you have custom modules. Changes to access rights, mail tracking and push notifications are exactly the kind of thing that breaks custom code during an upgrade. For that reason, any customised system needs a test migration before going live on Odoo 20.
How much does Odoo 20 cost?
Odoo 20 does not change the price of the Standard plan. At the launch, Odoo announced that the Custom plan will go up by about 20% from 2027 (its first price rise in four years, which it blamed on 26% cumulative inflation and rising AI and hosting costs). A new Light User tier costs €7.90 per employee for HR functions. The "one app free" offer stays.
Two things to budget for:
- AI credits. Odoo's release notes say all AI features now use IAP credits, so heavy AI use has a running cost on top of your licence.
- Upgrade work. The licence is only part of the cost. If you have custom modules or third-party apps, they must be updated for Odoo 20. That is usually where most of the upgrade effort goes.

Should you upgrade to Odoo 20 now?
Most businesses should not move a live system to Odoo 20 in the first weeks. A new major version always gets a wave of bug fixes after launch, and the third-party apps you rely on need time to release Odoo 20 versions. Test now, plan the move, and upgrade once your apps and customisations are ready. The table below gives our advice for each situation.

Which Odoo versions are supported after Odoo 20?
Odoo gives standard support to the three most recent major versions. With Odoo 20 released, that means Odoo 18, Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 are supported. Odoo 17's standard support ends in September 2026 on Odoo's published schedule, and Odoo 16 and older are already outside it. How do you upgrade to Odoo 20?
You upgrade to Odoo 20 by testing the migration on a copy of your database first, fixing whatever breaks, and only then upgrading the live system. Enterprise customers can use Odoo's official upgrade service. Community users usually rely on the open-source OpenUpgrade scripts from the Odoo Community Association (OCA). In both cases, custom modules must be updated by a developer.
- List what you run. Note every installed app, third-party module and customisation, and check that each has an Odoo 20 version.
- Take a full backup of the database and filestore.
- Run a test migration on a copy, never on the live system.
- Update custom modules and re-test integrations (payment gateways, eCommerce connectors, e-invoicing).
- Let real users test their daily work: invoicing, stock moves, payroll and reports.
- Upgrade production on a quiet day, with a rollback plan ready.
- Check after go-live: opening balances, open invoices, stock levels and scheduled actions.

How long does an Odoo 20 upgrade take?
A straightforward Odoo upgrade with few customisations usually takes 2 to 4 weeks from test migration to go-live. A system with many custom modules, integrations or several versions to jump can take 2 to 3 months. Most of that time goes into testing and updating custom code, not into running the upgrade itself.

Is Odoo 20 free?
Odoo 20, like earlier versions, comes in two editions. The Community edition is free and open source. The Enterprise edition is paid per user, and Odoo's "one app free" offer continues. AI features use IAP credits, which are paid separately.
Is Odoo 17 still supported after the Odoo 20 release?
Only until the end of September 2026. Odoo supports the three most recent major versions, so with Odoo 20 out the supported versions are 18, 19 and 20, and Odoo 17's standard support ends in September 2026. If you run Odoo 17 or older, you should plan an upgrade now.
Will my custom modules work in Odoo 20?

Can I test Odoo 20 before upgrading?
Yes. Odoo runs a free Odoo 20 test environment, but test databases are deleted every week, so use it only to explore features. To test with your own data, run a test migration on a copy of your database. Your live system is not touched.
Should I move from Odoo 18 straight to Odoo 20?
Often, yes. Skipping Odoo 19 and going straight to Odoo 20 saves you a second project next year. The migration still has to pass through each version's database changes, so allow extra testing time, especially if you have custom modules.
