Odoo 20 AI Credits Cost: What AI Really Costs per Month, and Whether You Need the Custom Plan

Odoo 20 puts AI at the centre of the product. Agents that create records, AI fields that fill themselves and scheduled AI automations all run on one meter: Odoo AI credits. For an Indian business, the real Odoo 20 AI credits cost has three parts that most guides mix up: the credits, 18% GST on top, and the plan change the AI app can force.

This guide is for owners, CFOs and IT heads in India who want a monthly number before they switch AI on. It shows the credit packs in rupees, gives planning ranges and a worked example, explains when AI pushes you onto the Custom plan, and lists the controls that stop a surprise bill. What are Odoo AI credits?

Odoo AI credits are prepaid units that pay for Odoo's built-in AI features. They are sold through Odoo's in-app purchase (IAP) service. Odoo's documentation says Odoo AI "uses Odoo's In-App Purchase (IAP) service for AI requests" and that "AI usage consumes IAP credits." Every AI chat, agent action or generated field value takes credits from a balance that belongs to one service and one database.

Three rules shape your budget, according to Odoo's AI credit service page:

1. Credits are tied to one database. Credits bought on a test copy don't move to production.
2. Credits don't expire. They stay on your account until used. Unused credits can be refunded on request within 30 days of purchase.
3. When credits run out, the AI feature stops. Your workflow carries on without AI. Odoo emails the users you choose before the balance hits your threshold, and you can turn on auto-refill.

AI credits are separate from your user licences. You pay for them on top of your Standard or Custom subscription.

How much does one Odoo AI credit cost in India?

One Odoo AI credit costs €1.00. Odoo prices it in euros on the IAP page, so Indian buyers pay the converted amount plus GST. Odoo sells four packs, all at the same unit price:

Euro prices as listed on iap.odoo.com on 5 November 2026. INR figures use ₹100 = €1 to keep the maths simple. Check the day's rate and your card's forex markup. Your IAP page may show local currency.

What this means in practice: there's no saving from buying the Expert pack, so start with 100 credits. Unused credits can be refunded within 30 days, but small packs avoid the need to ask.

GST on AI credits. Budget 18% GST either way. If the pack is invoiced with Indian GST, claim input tax credit as usual. If it is invoiced by an Odoo entity outside India, a GST-registered business usually pays 18% under reverse charge as an import of services. Check your Odoo invoice and confirm the treatment with your CA.

How many credits does an Odoo AI request use?

Odoo doesn't publish a fixed rate. Its credit page says: "Credit usage varies based on the specific AI feature, task complexity, and the size of your request." A short question to an agent uses less than a long, multi-step task that reads files and updates records.

Two things make early budgets unreliable. Credit use is not visible before a request runs. And in October 2026, Odoo's CEO acknowledged an "issue with credit consumption" that Odoo said it had already fixed, according to an industry news digest. He also said Odoo is looking at cheaper models for simpler requests. Rates may still change.

Which Odoo 20 features spend credits?

Any feature that sends a request to Odoo AI spends credits. In Odoo 20 that includes:

• AI agents: chat questions, record creation and updates, file reading, web search and image generation skills.
• AI server actions: automations where AI picks the next step. These run on triggers, so they spend credits without a user present.
• AI fields: fields that generate values from a prompt. Odoo's documentation says a daily scheduled action fills empty AI fields and is active by default.
• Agent sources: PDFs, web links and Knowledge articles that agents index and draw answers from.

Some services that Indian businesses use every day are billed through IAP too, but from separate balances with their own prices:

Note the gap in price. Scanning a vendor bill with Document Digitization costs cents. Asking a general AI agent to read the same bill costs whole credits. Pick the cheapest tool that does the job.

Do you need the Custom plan to use AI in Odoo 20?

Often, yes. Odoo's AI documentation states that installing the AI app on a database on the Standard pricing plan "automatically triggers an upsell to the Custom pricing plan." Creating or customising your own agents requires the AI app. If you are already on Custom (for Studio, multi-company, the external API or Odoo.sh hosting), AI adds only the credits.

On Standard, the plan change applies to every full user, not just the ones who use AI. In India that is ₹500 per user per month at Odoo's current annual offer (₹580 to ₹1,080) or ₹625 at the regular yearly rate (₹725 to ₹1,350):

For a 15-user company that would only spend ₹5,000 a month on credits, the plan change costs more than the AI itself. Before you install the AI app on Standard, ask Odoo or your partner which of the AI features you need work without it on your plan.

Worked example: monthly AI cost for a 15-user distributor in Bhubaneswar

A distributor in Bhubaneswar has 15 full users on the Standard plan. It wants three things from AI:

1. Read about 300 vendor bills a month.
2. Help 5 sales staff draft emails and summarise customer history, about 100 requests a month.
3. Run one custom agent each working day that reviews overdue invoices and drafts follow-ups (22 runs a month).

The custom agent needs the AI app, so the business moves to Custom.

Credits per request and per agent run are planning assumptions, not Odoo figures. INR at ₹100 = €1.

That is about ₹2.5–3.9 lakh a year before GST. Two lessons stand out. The plan change is the largest fixed line, and bill reading, the job with the clearest payback, is the cheapest line.

The break-even test. Divide each line's monthly cost by the hourly cost of the staff whose work it replaces. If an accounts executive costs the business ₹30,000 a month over 200 working hours, that is ₹150 an hour. At the high estimate, the overdue-invoice agent (₹11,000) must save about 73 hours a month to pay for itself. At the low estimate (₹4,400), it needs about 29 hours. If it can't, run that task by hand and spend the credits where the hours are.

Can you use your own ChatGPT or Gemini key in Odoo 20?

Not for Odoo's built-in AI, according to partner reports since the launch. In Odoo 19, the AI app supported OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google Gemini keys, and Odoo's 19.0 docs say an API key was required for AI on Odoo.sh and on-premise. In Odoo 20, built-in AI requests go through Odoo's own service and Odoo chooses the model, so they spend credits. As of 5 November 2026, Odoo's 20.0 page on AI API keys is marked "under construction", so check it before you rule out your own key.

There is an alternative. Odoo 20 includes an MCP server, which lets an outside AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude connect to your Odoo database and use the tools it exposes. You then pay your AI provider instead of Odoo, but that route needs API access, which on Odoo Online is part of the Custom plan. It also needs careful permissions. Self-hosted? If you run Odoo 20 Enterprise on your own server or Odoo.sh, AI document search needs the pgvector PostgreSQL extension. Plan the server set-up with your implementation partner.

How to cap and control Odoo AI spend

IAP has low-balance alerts and an optional auto-refill, but no monthly spending cap. These eight steps keep the bill predictable:

1. Pilot on the 20 free credits. Run real tasks from one team for two weeks and note credits used per task type.
2. Pilot on the database you'll keep. Credits are tied to one database, so credits bought on a test copy are stranded.
3. Buy 100-credit packs. The unit price is the same at every size, so large packs only add risk.
4. Set an alert threshold and recipients. In Odoo, open the AI service's account page under Settings → Odoo IAP → View My Services, and add the finance owner as a recipient.
5. Leave auto-refill off at first. When credits run out, the AI feature stops rather than breaking your workflow. Turn auto-refill on once usage is stable.
6. Check the daily AI-field action. In Settings → Technical → Scheduled Actions, review the action that fills empty AI fields, and limit AI fields to records that need them.
7. Limit triggers on scheduled agents. An agent that runs on every record change spends far more than one that runs once a day.
8. Name a cost owner for each AI workflow. Review credits against hours saved every month, using the break-even test above.

What to check about data before you switch AI on

Odoo's built-in AI sends request content to Odoo's AI service, even if you host Odoo yourself. Odoo's AI documentation doesn't name the model provider behind it. Before you enable AI on HR, payroll or customer records, decide which data agents may read. Check those flows against your obligations under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Start with low-risk data such as products, vendor bills and internal notes.

Who should switch on Odoo AI now, and who should wait

Switch on now if you:

• are already on the Custom plan, so AI adds only credits
• have high-volume, repetitive work such as vendor bills, lead follow-up or record entry
• can name a person to own the AI budget and review it monthly

Wait or start small if you:

• are on Standard with many full users and only a light AI need
• handle sensitive personal data and haven't mapped what AI may read
• are mid-implementation. Go live on core processes first, then add AI.
